Meet Our Team

Audrey Johnson

Principal

Audrey Johnson has been an educator for over 25 years working in Kansas City, Kansas, Kansas City, MO as well in Memphis, TN. Ms. Johnson has worked at both the elementary and middle school level and served as a SPA Nola Leadership Coach for three years. Her most current role was as a Principal in a K-8 school in Memphis. Ms. Johnson's first role as principal was in an elementary school, which was on the priority list and a part of Shelby County Schools' Striving School pilot. During her 4-year tenure of aggressive work, Ms. Johnson and her team were able to move this school from the priority list and shift the trajectory for the students in this school community. Ms. Johnson and her team were able to lead this school to become a 4-year Reward school in the state of Tennessee. Ms. Johnson has continued to serve students that are in high priority areas and worked in turn-around work. Most of her work has been in areas that serve schools in the bottom 5% of state achievement. She has a passion for educating students in these areas. Seeing her students turn other people's doubts and thoughts of impossibility to possibilities; these students, who she calls the underdogs to become successful, turning disbelief into belief, fills her heart with joy. Before becoming an educator, she has served in the United States Air Force, became a waitress after being honorably discharged, worked at the Board of Education as a secretary in Kansas City, KS, and later became a teacher. Ms. Johnson holds a B.A. degree in Elementary Education, a M.S. degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, as well as a M.A. degree in Educational Supervision and Leadership. Other educational roles include her work as a School Counselor, Literacy Coach, and New Leader for New Schools Resident Principal. Ms. Johnson truly believes in the power of leadership development, whether it is personal, for teachers, parents, or students. Leadership has power, moves mountains, shapes nations, and determines our future. Always a teacher, always a leader!

Terrence Brownlee

Assistant Principal

Terrence Brownlee has been a lifetime resident of Memphis, TN. Terrence attended Westwood High School, where he participated in school leadership, marching band, and JROTC. After high school, Terrence attended the University of Memphis, earning a Bachelor's degree in Teacher All Learning (Gen Edu K-6th & SPED K-12th) and a minor in History.

Mr. Brownlee began his work in education, working as a second grade teacher at New Hope Christian. During his time there, he realized his love for working with students who are considered unteachable. Because of that love, Terrence has worked in education for over eight years. In 2019, he earned his Master's degree in Education Administration and served as the Founding Middle School Principal at Leadership Prep for two years. Mr. Brownlee says, "I do this work because I want to change the narrative of young brown-skinned boys. I want to be about the change for the future of this world." Mr. Brownlee is married to his beautiful wife of ten plus years and together they are raising three handsome young men.

Principal’s Message

Dear East Academy Cougar Family,

As the principal of East Academy, I would like to welcome you all back to a new school year.  We are excited to have our scholars back in your school building and their energy filling our halls with enthusiasm.   It is our mission to help every child feel welcomed and connected to our Cougar family.  Additionally, we strive to have each scholar meet their academic goals and increase their capacity by the end of the school year.  At East, we have great teachers who spend hours planning and creating classroom activities to engage our students in learning.  Our teachers utilize research-based best practices and analyze academic data to determine current skill levels and to set goals for growth and improvement.

Please make sure that you sign-up for ParentSquare so that you can be abreast of all our events and activities that we will engage in this school year.

It is truly my honor to serve as your school principal this year and be a part of this great community of parents, teachers, and students.  We strive this year to continue our path of developing positive relationships and supporting your scholar’s academic and social growth.  Please feel free to reach out to me on ParentSquare or at ajohnson@myjourneycs.org
